Medicinal Uses

Fenugreek is one of the oldest recorded medicinal herbs, highly esteemed by both east and west, and has been regarded as a treatment for just about every ailment known to man. Fenugreek has a beneficial action on cleansing the blood.

As a diaphoretic it is able to bring on a sweat and to help detox the body. This takes place through the pores of the skin. The pungent aroma of fenugreek may be smelt on the skin and in under-arm perspiration. This is evidence that the herb is working well: shower frequently! The body odour of fenugreek is nowhere near as offensive as a body reeking of garlic. After using the sprouts for a while, this fenugreek body aroma, does not seem to be so apparent, maybe, the sprouts have done a pretty good cleanse.

Fenugreek also has the reputation as a lymphatic cleansing herb. The lymphatic system is the vacuum cleaner of the body. It has the vital role to irrigate the cells with nutrients and to remove toxic wastes, dead cells and trapped proteins. The fluid is cleaned through the lymph nodes, before the body’s 13 litres of filtered lymph fluid recycles again, via the subclavian vein near the heart. A blocked lymphatic system can mean poor circulation, fluid retention, pain, loss of energy and dis-ease, anywhere in the body. An efficiently working lymphatic system is essential for a strong immune system. This is a wonderful feature of fenugreek… for stimulating and fortifying the immune system.

Fenugreek is a practical herb for all mucus conditions of the body, particularly the lungs, by helping to clear congestion. It is a powerful antioxidant and it acts as a mucus solvent and throat cleanser, which also eases the urge to cough. Even drinking the water that seeds have soaked in and been rinsed with, helps to soften and dissolve, accumulated and hardened masses of cellular debris. Use fenugreek for head colds, influenza, catarrh, constipation, bronchial complaints, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, pleurisy, tuberculosis, sore throat, laryngitis, hay fever and sinusitis.

Fenugreek has been used for peptic ulcers and inflamed conditions of the stomach and bowel, absorbing toxic material and eliminating it; the healing and soothing action, creates a protective coating, like a lubricant, over inflamed areas. To make a tea, use 1 teasp. of seeds to 1 cup boiling water. People find that drinking a cup of the tea before meals can bring relief from numerous ailments. Fenugreek has helped travellers who have experienced abdominal griping pains and gastric upsets, when travelling in countries where food and water have been contaminated. The slightly bitter properties of the seed are beneficial to digestion.

Other medicinal uses of fenugreek have included: indigestion, allergies, anaemia, chronic fatigue, toothache, sciatica, neuralgia, arthritis, rheumatism, gout, blood poisoning, anorexia, acne, oedema, hernia, muscular pain, constipation, diarrhoea, blood cleanser, headache, migraine, menstrual discomfort, menopause symptoms including hot flushes, mood swings and stress, ear infections and waxy ear, failing eyesight, cataracts, glaucoma and sore eyes, palpitations, ulcers, stabilise hormone function, to relieve fevers from infectious diseases like measles and mumps, for sugar cravings, to aid fat metabolism, weight loss, internal ‘spring-cleaning’, and to stimulating the reproductive organs and relieving impotence. Fenugreek has had the reputation for enhancing libido. No wonder it has been called an aphrodisiac. I smiled, when I read in a herbal, ‘Fenugreek, for making an old man into a young man’! Fenugreek is warming to the kidneys and the reproductive organs, of both male and female, and can be taken for any ailments of these organs to help remove congestion and toxins.

Use fenugreek to strengthen the nervous system, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, gall bladder and glands. Fenugreek seeds, either dry, or soaked in water for a few hours are chewed, as a breath freshener. Eating the sprouts, gives a similar benefit to the breath.

Fenugreek has a powerful demulcent action, as it is rich in mucilage and can soothe irritated or inflamed tissue. For relief from the agonising symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and diverticulitis, the ‘soak-and-rinse water’ is drunk and the sprouts blended to a liquid. An old herbal, refers to fenugreek tea as the supreme herb for its ability to ‘clean out your insides… nothing else can do the trick with such effectiveness, the mucilaginous properties of fenugreek soften and dissolve masses of accumulated wastes and toxins’. Scientific research has identified over a hundred biological compounds in the plant, many of them having exceptionally therapeutic benefits to the body. Fenugreek is a truly remarkable, rejuvenating herb; use it to fortify the immune system. No wonder it has been called the herb for ‘every ailment under the sun’!

Culinary Uses

Crushed fenugreek seed is an ingredient in curry powder. Seeds are added to pastries, marinades, pickles, chutneys and brines. The aroma of the seed is spicy, the flavour slightly pungent and bitter. The young leaves of fenugreek plants and the green seeds, shelled from green pods, taste like green peas.

Soaked seed, used as ‘fenugreek berries’ at 24 hours of germination, are soft and jelly-like, with a pleasantly mild flavour. If grown to 1cm long, sprouts are delicious, with a mild, spicy flavour. If grown to the green leaf stage (3-4cm) the flavour is slightly stronger and mildly bitter. However, as bitter flavours are good for us, we can learn to appreciate the benefits when sprouts are this length, too. Eat fenugreek sprouts as a snack, fresh-in-hand, added to sandwiches, salads, juiced with vegetables, mixed with potato salad and other root vegetables; use as a garnish, added to soups, rice and pasta dishes and stir-fries, just before serving. Do not cook sprouts as they go mushy. Top a slice of wholemeal bread, butter and Promite or Vegemite with sprouts. Try sprouts with slices of fresh paw-paw, pineapple or mango. The soak or rinse water (besides drinking it for the health benefits), can also be added to stocks for soups and added to curries and sauces.

Fenugreek sprouts are my favourite: they are so quick and easy to grow and I know when I eat them, they are so very valuable to health. I eat fenugreek sprouts on bread and spreads for lunch, and with salads on the evening meal. I am very partial to a slice of bread or toast, topped with honey or ginger jam, kefir or cream and fenugreek sprouts. In our household, we eat more fenugreek sprouts than any other sprouts. My 8 year old, grand daughter, Jessica loves fenugreek sprouts.

For breakfast, I enjoy a handful of fenugreek sprouts, muesli, kefir, topped with herbs, and sometimes with fresh fruit in season. I value herbs as they are disease preventing and contain vital essences, important to health. Herbs help to cleanse and purify the body and are potent, plant tonics. To go on top of the muesli and sprouts, I pick fresh herbs:

Herb Robert

Geranium robertianum

provides a powerful antibiotic and antioxidant arsenal, valuable healing properties and the mineral germanium, with the ability to make oxygen more readily available to the cells of the body. Germanium stimulates electrical impulses at cellular level, which have a beneficial, ripple effect, throughout the whole body.45 Germaniums remarkable effects on the immune system have been documented in medical journals. Herb Robert has had many therapeutic uses, particularly for: cancer, cancer prevention, chronic fatigue, arthritis and rheumatism, asthma, mental disorders, skin conditions, eye diseases, old-age infirmities, Parkinson’s Disease, digestive ailments, headaches and migraines, cardiac and circulatory conditions, diabetes, in fact, it appears beneficial for every ailment know to man. I pick 4-5 leaves and stems, to go on my breakfast.

Gotu kola

Centella asiatica

4-5 leaves and stems for the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antioxidant, blood purifying and tonic properties. The benefits of gotu kola have been known for centuries: valued for treating arthritis, rheumatism and autoimmune diseases, low thyroid function, fatigue, poor circulation, aenemia and blood disorders including high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, stress and depression, impotence, lupus, convulsions, senility and asthma, to name a few. It is noted for its ability to increase stamina, brain capacity and memory recall; and is an extremely beneficial tonic for all organs and systems of the body, to promote wellbeing and general good health. Gotu kola is easy to grow, just add a few leaves to your breakfast… it has been called the elixir of life!

Brahmi

Bacopa monnieri

is an easy to grow, groundcover herb. I pick a few sprigs, 3-4cm long, and cut them finely into the bowl. Brahmi contains nitric oxide. In 1998 the Nobel Prize for medicine, was awarded to three pharmacologists for their discovery, that nitric oxide, in its natural form, has powerful potential, as a messenger molecule in the body, giving an extremely positive effect on learning ability, concentration, confidence, memory recall; as well as benefits to blood circulation, and the function of the liver, lungs, kidneys; in fact, for strengthening the immune system and level of vitality. The Royal Society of British Science published a paper on nitric oxide calling it, ‘the marvel of the decade’.

Sheep sorrel

Acetosella vulgaris

I pick 4-5 leaves to add to my breakfast bowl. Sheep sorrel is a rich source or vitamin C and has strong antiviral, antioxidant and tonic properties. As the leaves stimulate the salivary glands in the mouth, a few leaves at the commencement of a meal, are most beneficial to aid digestion.

Sweet leaf

Sauropus androgynus

a plant I value for its 34% protein leaves, which taste like fresh peas. The dark-green leaves provide a rich source of vitamin C, potassium, iron, and also chlorophyll, which is a blood builder and cell rejuvenator. Any plant with high nutritional value, like sweet leaf, that helps to detoxify the body, is valuable in our daily diet. Herbs are alkaline, which help build the formula for health, vital for balancing the body’s pH. Herbs have a wide spectrum of antioxidants, which have the ability to fight free radicals that are continually attacking our cells, to destroy or mutate them. Antioxidants also help to build strong defences against cardio-vascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, and protect from cancer. Herbs are a powerful aid to the digestion, and to cleanse, revitalise and rejuvenate the cells, thereby supporting the body’s natural, healing process.

What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek (also known as Greek Hay and Fenigreek), is an herb that is commonly found growing in the Mediterranean region of the world. While the seeds and leaves are primarily used as a culinary spice, it is also used to treat a variety of health problems in Egypt, Greece, Italy, and South Asia.

Fenugreek seeds have been found to contain protein, vitamin C, niacin, potassium, and diosgenin (which is a compound that has properties similar to estrogen). Other active constituents in fenugreek are alkaloids, lysine and L-tryptophan, as well as steroidal saponins (diosgenin, yamogenin, tigogenin, and neotigogenin).

What are the Benefits of Fenugreek?

Due to its estrogen-like properties, fenugreek has been found to help increase libido and lessen the effect of hot flashes and mood fluctuations that are common symptoms of menopause and PMS. In India and China it has also been used to treat arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, improve digestion, maintain a healthy metabolism, increase libido and male potency, cure skin problems (wounds, rashes and boils), treat sore throat, and cure acid reflux. Fenugreek also has a long history of use for the treatment of reproductive disorders, to induce labor, to treat hormonal disorders, to help with breast enlargement, and to reduce menstrual pain. Recent studies have shown that Fenugreek helps lower blood glucose and cholestrol levels, and may be an effective treatment for both type 1 and 2 diabetes. Fenugreek is also being studied for its cardiovascular benefits.

Uses of Fenugreek

Home Remedy for Balancing Cholesterol

Studies have found people who took 2 ounces (56g) of fenugreek seed each day had significantly (around 14 percent) lower cholesterol levels after 24 weeks, and had lowered their risk of heart attack by more than 25 percent. Therefore, a recommended remedy for lowering cholesterol is to take 2 ounces of Fenugreek seeds throughout the day. The seeds can be sprinkled onto prepared food, or they can be consumed with water if they are in capsule form.

Treating Diabetes and Lowering Blood Sugar Levels

Studies have shown that participants with type 2 diabetes had significantly lower blood sugar levels after eating fenugreek. Therefore, a recommended home remedy for treating Type 2 diabetes is to consume 500mg of fenugreek twice daily.

Herbal Cure for Skin Inflammation

Research has shown that Fenugreek is an effective topical treatment for skin problems such as abscesses, boils, burns, eczema, and gout. Therefore, a simple skin inflammation remedy is the following:

  • Take a spoonful of fenugreek and grind it into a powder.
  • Mix the ground fenugreek with warm water.
  • Take a simple piece of clean cloth and soak it into the mixture.
  • Apply the soaked cloth directly onto the affected skin as a poultice.

Natural Cure for Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Fenugreek seeds contain a lot of mucilage, which helps sooth gastrointestinal inflammation by coating the lining of the stomach and intestine. Therefore, for an effective remedy against heartburn or Acid Reflux, simply sprinkle 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds onto your food. Another option is to take one teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds and swallow them with water or juice before any meal.

Home Remedy for Fever

The Fenugreek herb has been known to help reduce fever when taken with lemon and honey, since it nourishes the body during an illness. Therefore, to treat a fever, simply consume one to two teaspoons of Fenugreek seeds three times a day along with an herbal tea (such as green tea) with a teaspoon of honey and lemon juice. Some health food stores also sell herbal Fenugreek teas, which can be used instead of the green tea.

Breast Enlargement

Fenugreek is often used in many teas and other products that help balance women’s hormones and/or enlarge the breasts. Therefore, a simple home remedy for breast enlargement is to make Fenugreek a part of your regular diet. A common suggestion is to consume up to 3g of Fenugreek per day.

Remedy to Ease Child Birth for Pregnant Women

Fenugreek stimulates uterine contractions and can be helpful to induce childbirth. However, pregnant women should only use Fenugreek for inducing labor after consulting with their doctor.

Remedy to Aid Milk Production in Lactating Women

Fenugreek has been known to increase milk production in lactating women. Research has even shown that milk production can increase by over 500 percent within 24 to 72 hours after consuming fenugreek. Although it is not known why this happens, researchers speculate that the oil contained in fenugreek seeds plays a role. Therefore, a recommended remedy to increase milk flow is to consume one capsule of fenugreek seed (at least 500mg) three times a day.

What are the Side Effects of Fenugreek?

While Fenugreek is generally considered to be safe when used moderately, there have been reports of a few minor side-effects. Nausea is one common side effect, while other people have reported gastrointestinal discomfort (diarrhea and/or gas). Also, when using fenugreek topically on the skin, it is important to watch out for skin irritations and rashes.

Fenugreek use during pregnancy is not recommended, since it has the potential to induce labor. If you are pregnant and wish to take it, you should do so only after consultation with your doctor.

If you are currently taking any oral medications, you should always use Fenugreek at least 2 hours before or after these drugs. This is important since Fenugreek fiber has the potential to interfere with the absorption of oral medications due to its mucilaginous fiber (which gives it a moist and sticky texture).

Where and How to Buy Fenugreek

Fenugreek is often available in capsules, seed, and powder form at many health food stores. Fenugreek seeds can also often be found at Indian/Pakistani grocery stores. You may also be able to find Fenugreek herbal tea bags.

What is fenugreek? – Fenugreek is one of the world’s oldest medicinal herbs. It has a variety of uses, including increasing breastmilk production.
Fenugreek is the small stony seeds from the pod of a bean-like plant. The seeds are hard, yellowish brown and angular. Some are oblong, some rhombic, other virtually cubic, with a side of about 3mm (1/8″). A deep furrow all but splits them in two. They are available whole and dried , or as a dull yellow powder, ground from the roasted seeds.Bouquet: Warm and penetrating, becoming more pronounced when the seeds are roasted. Ground, they give off a ‘spicy’ smell, pungent, like an inferior curry powder which would probably contain too much fenugreek.Flavor: Powerful, aromatic and bittersweet, like burnt sugar. There is a bitter aftertaste, similar to celery or lovage.

Where does it grow? – Fenugreek is indigenous to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, but it is grown in India, Morocco, Egypt and England. The herb can grow to be about two feet tall. It blooms white flowers in the summer and has very aromatic seeds.

What is it used for ? – Fenugreek seeds are ground and roasted and used to flavor to curry. The seeds are also soaked and then powdered and used to make lip balm and tonic. The seeds can be used to make tea, which can reduce fever and menstrual pains, or they can be used in an ointment to treat skin infections. The seeds have also been used to increase libido in men and serve as an aphrodisiac. Ground seeds are often used to give a maple flavor to sweets and candies. Ground seeds are also used to flavor cattle food, including different vegetable meals and hays. Fenugreek’s leaves, which are high in iron, are used in salads. Taken internally, fenugreek is used to treat bronchitis, coughs, respiratory problems, sinus conditions and to increase milk supply (see more below).

Fenugreek in history – The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used Fenugreek for medicinal and culinary purposes. According to Kathleen E. Huggins, RN, MS, director of the Breastfeeding Clinic at San Luis Obispo General Hospital, fenugreek was one of the major ingredients of Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, a popular 19th century cure-all for “female complaints.”

Fenugreek and breastfeeding – Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply. Scientists do not know for sure how this happens. Some believe it is possible because breasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production. It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother’s milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast stimulation. Many women today take fenugreek in a pill form (ground seeds placed in capsules). The pills can be found at most vitamin and nutrition stores and at many supermarkets and natural foods stores. Fenugreek can also be taken in tea form, although tea is believed to be less potent than the pills and the tea comes with a bitter taste that can be hard to stomach.
Fenugreek is not right for everyone. The herb has caused aggravated asthma symptoms in some women and has lowered blood glucose levels in some women with diabetes. Please read Fenugreek Precautions and Dr. Ruth Lawrence’s article Herbs and Breastfeeding for more information on fenugreek.

    FENUGREEK / HULBAH /

Fenugreek

    History

The name “fenugreek” or foenum-graecum is from Latin for “Greek hay”. The Marathi name is Methi (मेथी) or Methya (मेथ्या). The Kannada name is “menthya” (ಮೆಂತ್ಯ). The Tamil name for it is “Vendayam” (வெந்தயம்). The Telugu name for it is “Menthulu” (మెంతులు). The Malayalam name is “Uluva” (ഉലുവ).In Sinhala it is called Uluhaal (උළුහාල්). (In Oriya,Bangla, Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi it is called Methi (मेथी) (Urdu: میتھی). In Persian it is Shanbalîleh (شنبليله), and in Arabic its name is Hilbeh (حلبة). The Malay language borrows the term halba from Arabic. The plant’s similarity to wild clover has likely spawned its Swedish name, “bockhornsklöver” as well as in German – “Bockshornklee” , literally meaning ‘ram’s horn clover’. Zohary and Hopf note that it is not yet certain which wild strain of the genus Trigonella gave rise to the domesticated fenugreek but believe it was brought into cultivation in the Near East. Charred fenugreek seeds have been recovered from Tell Halal, Iraq, (radiocarbon dating to 4000 BC) and Bronze Age levels of Lachish, as well as desiccated seeds from the tomb of Tutankhamen.[2] Cato the Elder lists fenugreek with clover and vetch as crops grown to feed cattle (De Agri Cultura, 27).

    Production

Major fenugreek producing countries are India, Pakistan, Argentina, Egypt, France, Spain, Turkey, Morocco and China. While India is the largest producer in the World. In India, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab are the major fenugreek producing states. While Rajasthan has maximum area and production of about more than 80% of India’s total production, the Qasoori Methi, more popular for its appetizing fragrance, comes from Qasur, Pakistan, and regions irrigated by Sutlej River, in Indian and Pakistani states of Punjab. (sources: T. Jilani PhD, Arizona, DASD 2007) [3] & [4]

    Cuisine

The cuboid yellow to amber coloured fenugreek seed, commonly called maithray, is frequently used in the preparation of pickles, curry powders, and pastes, and is often encountered in the cuisine of the Indian subcontinent. The seeds are used in seasoning many dishes or in powdered form to mix with rice, since health benefits of thus added seeds (or leaves) to diet in moderate quantities are considerable. The young leaves and sprouts of fenugreek are eaten as greens, and the fresh or dried leaves are used to flavour other dishes. The dried leaves (called kasturi methi) have a bitter taste and a strong characteristic smell.

Fenugreek green is a very popular curry cooked in the major sub-continental region of India and Pakistan, usually together with potatoes and/or spinach, and eaten with Roti or Naan (tortiya) and/or rice. It is usually eaten boiled in China, and central and Western Asia.

In India, fenugreek seeds are mixed with yogurt and used as a conditioner for hair. It is also one of the ingredients in the making of khakhra, a type of bread. It is used in injera/taita, a type of bread unique to Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine. The word for fenugreek in Amharic is abesh, and the seed is reportedly also often used in Ethiopia as a natural herbal medicine in the treatment of diabetes. It is also sometimes used as an ingredient in the production of clarified butter (Amharic: qibé, Ethiopian and Eritrean Tigrinya: tesme), which is similar to Indian ghee. In Turkey, fenugreek gives its name, çemen, to a hot paste used in pastırma. The same paste is used in Egypt for the same purpose. The Arabic word hulba حلبة (Helba in Egypt) for the seed resembles its Mandarin Chinese counterpart hu lu ba. In Yemen it is the main condiment and an ingredient added to the national dish called saltah. Fenugreek, or shanbalîleh شنبليله in Persian, is also one of four herbs used for the Iranian recipe Ghormeh Sabzi.

In Egypt, fenugreek seeds are prepared as tea, by being boiled then sweetened. This is a popular winter drink served in coffee shops. In other parts of the Middle East fenugreek is used in a variety of sweet confections. A cake dessert known as Helba in the Islamic world is a tasty treat during Islamic holidays. This is a semolina cake covered in sugar or maple-like syrup, and sprinkled with fenugreek seeds on top.

Jews customarily eat fenugreek during the meal of the first and/or second night of Rosh Hashana (The New Year). Its Aramaic name רוביא sounds like the word for “increase”; it is eaten with a prayer “that our merits increase.” [5] Yemenite Jews often prepare a foamy substance from fenugreek seeds that they add to soups.

In Bulgaria, fenugreek seeds are used as one of the ingredients in a traditional spice mixture called sharena sol (шарена сол).

In the United States, where maple syrup is popular but expensive, fenugreek is widely used in lower-cost syrup products as a maple syrup flavoring such as Mapleine.

    Lactation

Fenugreek seeds are a galactagogue that is often used to increase milk supply in lactating women.[6] Because the maple syrup-like flavor is strong and not always liked, the seeds are ground to a powder and administered in capsules. Many lactating women who take fenugreek in the quantities required to increase their milk supply notice that their skin exudes a distinct “maple syrup” odor.

    Seeds

    Dried fenugreek seed

Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of the polysaccharide galactomannan. They are also a source of saponins such as diosgenin, yamogenin, gitogenin, tigogenin, and neotigogens. Other bioactive constituents of fenugreek include mucilage, volatile oils, and alkaloids such as choline and trigonelline.

Fenugreek seeds are used as and herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine under the name Hu Lu Ba. In TCM it warms and tonifies kidneys, disperses cold and alleviates pain. Main indications are cold hernia, pain in the groin. It’s used raw or toasted.

Fenugreek is frequently used in the production of flavoring for artificial maple syrups. The taste of toasted fenugreek, like cumin, is additionally based on substituted pyrazines. By itself, fenugreek has a bitter taste.

In the Malay language fenugreek is known as halba (from the Arabic). The seeds are often included in the preparation of a traditional dessert called butir nangka, which is very popular around Ramadan.

Fenugreek seed is widely used as a galactagogue (milk producing agent) by nursing mothers to increase inadequate breast milk supply. Studies have shown that fenugreek is a potent stimulator of breastmilk production and its use was associated with increases in milk production of as much as 900%.[7] It can be found in capsule form in many health food stores.[8]

Supplements of fenugreek seeds were shown to lower serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein in human patients and experimental models of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia , although the benefits of lowering serum cholesterol in and of itself is controversial (see statins)[citation needed]. Several human intervention trials demonstrated that the antidiabetic effects of fenugreek seeds ameliorate most metabolic symptoms associated with type-1 and type-2 diabetes in both humans and relevant animal models by reducing serum glucose and improving glucose tolerance.[9] Fenugreek is currently available commercially in encapsulated forms and is being prescribed as dietary supplements for the control of hypercholesterolemia and diabetes by practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine.

    News

In February 2009, the International Frutarom Corporation factory in North Bergen, New Jersey, United States, was discovered to be the source of a maple syrup-like smell that had wafted throughout New York City intermittently since 2005. The odor was found to be an ester associated with fenugreek seed processing. No health risks have been found.[10]

Fenugreek is a native to India and southern Europe. For centuries it has grown wild in India, the Mediterranean and North Africa. where it is mainly cultivated. A limited crop grows in France. It was used by the ancient Egyptians to combat fever and grown in classical times as cattle fodder. Commercially, it is used in the preparation of mango chutneys and as a base for imitation maple syrup. In India it is used medicinally, and as a yellow dyestuff. It is also an oriental cattle fodder and is planted as a soil renovator. In the West, fenugreek’s therapeutic use is now largely confined to the treatment of animals, though historically. it has been used in human medicine. The name derives from the Latin ‘Greek hay” illustrating its classical use as fodder.

    Spice Description
Fenugreek is the small stony seeds from the pod of a bean-like plant. The seeds are hard, yellowish brown and angular. Some are oblong, some rhombic, other virtually cubic, with a side of about 3mm (1/8”). A deep furrow all but splits them in two. They are available whole and dried , or as a dull yellow powder, ground from the roasted seeds.
Bouquet: Warm and penetrating, becoming more pronounced when the seeds are roasted. Ground, they give off a ‘spicy’ smell, pungent, like an inferior curry powder which would probably contain too much fenugreek.
Flavour: Powerful, aromatic and bittersweet, like burnt sugar. There is a bitter aftertaste, similar to celery or lovage.
    Hotness Scale: 2

Where to Buy Fenugreek on the Internet
For online purchases we recommend buying through one of the reputable dealers associated with Amazon and their trusted and secure online ordering system. Click here to shop for fenugreek.

    Preparation and Storage
Dried seeds should be lightly roasted before using (don’t overdo it though, or they will become bitter). After roasting, they are easily ground. A small amount will complement many other spices, but too much can be overpowering. If the seeds are required as part of a curry paste they can be soaked overnight to swell and soften, and be easily mixed with the other ingredients.

    Culinary Uses
The major use of fenugreek is in curry powders, figuring in many mixtures, especially vindaloo and the hot curries of Sri Lanka. It is an ingredient of Panch phoron, the Indian five-spice mixture. In home-made powders, the amount used can be controlled, but in cheap bought powders it often overpowers. When fish is curried, particularly strong-tasting fish such as tuna and mackerel, fenugreek is frequently included in the spice mixture. Many chutneys and pickles incorporate it and it gives a tangy aroma to vegetables. The leaves, both fresh and dried, are used in meat curries, dhal and vegetable dishes and chutneys. The seeds are an ingredient of the Middle Eastern confection halva. Flour mixed with ground fenugreek makes a spicy bread. In India the roasted ground seeds are infused for a coffee substitute or adulterant. A tea can be made by infusing teaspoon of seed with two cups of water for five minutes.

    Attributed Medicinal Properties
Fenugreek is a digestive aid. As an emollient it is used in poultices for boils, cysts and other complaints. Reducing the sugar level of the blood, it is used in diabetes in conjunction with insulin. It also lowers blood pressure. Fenugreek relieves congestion, reduces inflammation and fights infection. Fenugreek contains natural expectorant properties ideal for treating sinus and lung congestion, and loosens & removes excess mucus and phlegm. Fenugreek is also an excellent source of selenium, an anti-radiant which helps the body utilize oxygen. Fenugreek is a natural source of iron, silicon, sodium and thiamine. Fenugreek contains mucilagins which are known for soothing and relaxing inflamed tissues. Fenugreek stimulates the production of mucosal fluids helping remove allergens and toxins from the respiratory tract. Acting as an expectorant, Fenugreek alleviates coughing, stimulates perspiration to reduce fevers, and is beneficial for treating allergies, bronchitis and congestion. In the East, beverages are made from the seed to ease stomach trouble. The chemical make-up is curiously similar to cod liver oil, for which a decoction of the seed is sometimes used as a substitute. Many other properties are ascribed to it in India and the East and not surprisingly include aphrodisiac.

Fenugreek seeds contain alkaloids, including trigonelline, gentianine and carpaine compounds. The seeds also contain fiber, 4-hydroxyisoleucine and fenugreekine, a component that may have hypoglycemic activity. The mechanism is thought to delay gastric emptying, slow carbohydrate absorption and inhibit glucose transport.

Fenugreek may also increase the number of insulin receptors in red blood cells and improve glucose utilization in peripheral tissues, thus demonstrating potential anti-diabetes effects both in the pancreas and other sites. The amino acid 4- hydroxyisoleucine, contained in the seeds, may also directly stimulate insulin secretion.

    Plant Description and Cultivation
An erect hairy annual of the bean family, reaching 30-60 cm (1-2 ft.). The long slender stems bear tripartite, toothed, grey-green obovate leaves, 20-25 mm (3/4-1 in) long. The root is a mass of fingery structures. The sissile axillary flowers are white or pale yellow. The thin, sword-shaped pods are 10-15 cm (4-6 in), with a curved beak-like tip, each carrying 10-20 seeds. The plant radiates a spicy odour which persists on the hands after touching. Wild and cultivated varieties exist. Mild Mediterranean climates are most suitable. Plants mature in about four months. The whole plant is uprooted and allowed to dry. The seeds are threshed out and further dried.

Alternatif obat diabetes / kesaksian hulbah

Posted by hilbaplus on January 30, 2010

    Fenugreek

Khasiatnya…….

“The true benefits of fenugreek lie in its long history of medical uses. For centuries, spanning Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese Medicine and folk medicine, fenugreek has been used all over the world. Fenugreek has so many usages – almost too numerous to count, however, scientists have been able to narrow down fenugreek top two functions. Fenugreek has the ability to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol. With its ability to lower blood sugar, fenugreek may hold a special interest by people who suffer from diabetes.”

The effect of fenugreek seeds (Trigonella foenum graecum) on blood glucose and the serum lipid profile was evaluated in insulin-dependent (Type I) diabetic patients. Isocaloric diets with and without fenugreek were each given randomly for 10 d. Defatted fenugreek seed powder (100 g), divided into two equal doses, was incorporated into the diet and served during lunch and dinner. The fenugreek diet significantly reduced fasting blood sugar and improved the glucose tolerance test. There was a 54 per cent reduction in 24-h urinary glucose excretion. Serum total cholesterol, LDL and VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides were also significantly reduced. The HDL cholesterol fraction, however, remained unchanged. These results indicate the usefulness of fenugreek seeds in the management of diabetes.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenugreek

Several human intervention trials demonstrated that the antidiabetic effects of fenugreek seeds ameliorate most metabolic symptoms associated with type-1 and type-2 diabetes in both humans and relevant animal models (Basch et al., 2003; Srinivas, 2005). Fenugreek is currently available commercially in encapsulated forms and is being prescribed as dietary supplements for the control of hypercholesterolemia and diabetes by practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine.
